This excellent collection of articles and documents was originally presented at a conference sponsored by Worcester College, Oxford, in 2001. The tercentenary referred to in the title is the visit in 1701 of the archbishop of Philippopolis to Oxford during the life of the "Greek College." As Peter Doll indicates in his introduction, the "Greek College" represented an "ecumenical moment" which-as so many such moments -came to nought. Historians' interest in the links between Anglicanism and Orthodoxy in the early modern period has been stimulated recently by Judith Pinnington's Anglicans and Orthodox, Unity and Subversion, 1559-1725 (Gracewing, 2003), noted by this reviewer in Anglican and Episcopal History (2005). But, as Peter Doll points out, it would be wrong to assume this interest is a recent phenomenon; historians have been exploring the links between Anglicanism and Orthodoxy for some time. Equally, the Anglican church's interest in Orthodoxy had a long heritage before the Greek College began in 1699. Articles in the collection by Brown Patterson, Colin Davey, John Barren, and Charles Miller show that Anglican interest in Orthodoxy had been strong in the seventeenth century. Bishop Henry Compton of London (Edward Carpenter's "Protestant Bishop") was a warm supporter of Orthodoxy-perhaps as a counterbalance to the fear of Catholicism. Despite theological concerns, the Greek College was established at Gloucester Hall. Usefully, the collection includes a reprint of E. D. Tappe's 1954 article from Oxoniensia, briefly tracing the history of the college. …
