The Foundation for the Future is a non-profit organization that is deeply concerned with the future of humanity, from every point of view, but particularly long term human survival. Being well-funded, thanks to the vision of its founder, Walter Kistler, the Foundation financed an important Seminar by this name, which was officially hosted by UNESCO. Eminent scientists, joined a number of ecologically-responsible officials from various countries, were brought together to express their opinions concerning the prime threats facing mankind, and what could or should be done about these. The proceedings, comprising a complete record of the event, including transcripts of all presentations, commentary, and discussion sessions, has now been published in this most lavishly illustrated volume. The book is replete with maps, charts and diagrams, including spectacular color photographs taken from space. These graphically demonstrate the rapid sprawl of expanding urban areas over the face of the earth, as Third Word humanity explodes demographically and sends migrants not only to its own burgeoning Third World cities, but also to invade the cities of the more advanced nations.

The seminar combined the focus of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme with the Foundation For the Future's own emphasis on the long-term future of humanity. …
