More Graham Greene on Film: Uncollected Reviews and Fragments of Reviews

Article excerpt

Reviewing Graham Greene on Film: Collected Film Criticism 1935-1940 in Literature/ Film Quarterly (1:176-8). Gene D. Phillips. S.J., notes the omissions of Greene's libelous review of Wee Willie Winkie, but he assumes and the title implies that the rest of Greene's film criticism is included. In fact, a check of the periodical sources shows that the book omits seven reviews entirely and cuts forty-two more. It also ignores one essay on film and three reviews of books about film. In the absence of a comprehensive bibliography of Greene - and most of the items listed below have never been included in any list of Greene's work - these items are listed here. Since all of the items appeared in the Spectator, the periodical title is omitted. All untitled items carried "The Cinema" as headline. Asterisks indicate complete reviews that do not appear in Graham Greene on Film.
