In the 1500s, the English philosopher Francis Bacon stated, "Knowledge and human power are synony- mous." As nurses, we have learned that great things happen when individuals are empowered through informa- tion and clear direction. Use of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes is an excellent example. This book by Lucille Joel provides succinct but comprehensive and vital information on nursing, the health care environment, and the workplace from global and national perspectives. The power of nursing is built from knowing, and this book hits the mark.

The content is presented logically, from a historical review of nursing's development to more specific issues, such as patient rights and nursing licensure. A consistent theme is the response of nurses to societal demands. The complexity of what nurses do and how nurses have had to struggle are apparent in discussions of the use of nursing theories, the nursing process, and the nursing shortage.

Other chapters stress the role of nurses in multidisciplinary care, dilemmas inherent in our current health care system, and nursing's role in delivery of care. These discussions are intertwined with discussions on nursing education, leadership, patient advocacy, legal and ethical issues, career management, and public policy.
