The information age has irreversibly impacted the US Army's fundamental approach to warfare. Force XXI promises to revolutionize the roles of command and control, communications, computers and intelligence as force multipliers, making our Army more lethal, survivable, capable of sustained operations, deployable, versatile and sustainable. As a result, information-based warfare and weapon systems development is accelerating, and doctrine is evolving to cope with the multifaceted challenges that loom ahead. Training and experimentation today must integrate and synchronize continuous combined arms operations to enable, enhance and protect the commander's decision cycle and mission execution while providing a relative common picture (RCP) of the battlefield. This RCP will greatly improve situational awareness and ensure rapid, clear communication of the commander's intent in conducting future operations.

This section examines several exercises and organizations the Army has developed to help it manage change and look to the future. The Force XXI Campaign Plan and Task Force XXI Advanced Warfighting Experiment are examples. …
