This is a welcome addition to the corpus of editions of Occitan texts, neglected for so long. The edition of this prose work, consisting of episodes from saints' lives, is the result of a doctoral thesis, undertaken in the Romance Institute of the University of Munich over a number of years, by Monika Tausend, who has courageously attacked the problems of editing a text which exists in several manuscripts, of which there is a Catalan version, and which presents considerable problems of a linguistic and a methodological nature.

The Legenda aurea, as the Legenda sanctorum of Jacobus de Voragine came to be called, comes down to us in a Latin version from c. 1260. The offspring is so enormous that the number of manuscripts in a variety of European languages has not been fully calculated. The three Occitan manuscripts have been considered and the best, B, chosen. The resulting edition makes constant reference to the variant readings of the others and to the non-critical edition of the Latin text by Graesse (IBi 890), in expectation of a critical edition by Fleith.

The introduction considers each of the manuscripts in detail and provides a detailed account of the principles applied to the establishment of the text. …
