Machaut scholars owe Lawrence Earp a profound debt of gratitude because they now have a book that will effectively halve their research time. As the title suggests, the Guide is not simply a bibliography. Each chapter ('Biography', `Legacy and Influence', 'Manuscripts', 'Miniatures', `Narrative Poetry', `Lyric Poetry', `Musical Works') provides a full historiography of research which collates `the documentary material from many sources in a fashion that will facilitate further research' (p. xii) as well as offering copious bibliographical references to guide the reader with regard to the most recent discoveries and opinions. All references are keyed to the exhaustive and fully annotated bibliography that follows, and to the comprehensive index. In addition, Earp provides full tables of concordances where necessary (manuscripts, miniatures, narrative works, lyric poems, intercalations). The 'Discography' (chapter 8) lists all recordings of musical works by Machaut, as well as modern works inspired by Machaut. For literary scholars, the immensely detailed descriptions of all known Machaut manuscripts will be of particular value, especially the descriptions of the inaccessible MS Vg and the recently discovered MS W. …
