I am not sure that the title of this book would have encouraged me to read it if I had seen it on a shelf, but it did set me thinking about the conversations about health that I have been involved with recently. These have included comments from others, such as: Tm feeling rotten again, those pills the doctor gave me are useless'; 'We're losing another lot of specialist nurses because of the Trust's overspend'; Our reconfiguration is being forced through with no proper consultation'. This made me realize that these days most of our health-focused conversations tend to be pessimistic, critical and egocentric. In a positive sense, this book attempts to support an effective and forward-looking dialogue about health in order to help people develop a more balanced and informed view of the key issues affecting us all, be they practitioners, patients or policy makers.

The structure of the book originated from discussions that took place in an academic advisory board on European health targets funded by Merck & Co., Inc. The chairman had invited his members to consider the central features of issues such as: ethical concerns in modern Healthcare, human rights and equity, political and economic determinants of health. …
