Migratory connections between countries in the Caribbean and Britain, North America and Europe have persisted for many centuries This book provides a timely reminder that there are now significant return migration flows not only by retired returnees from among those cohorts of emigrants leaving the Caribbean in the 1950s to the 1970s, but also foreign-born returning nationals (p. 30). The latter represent a relatively recently identified phenomenon, people born in Britain, North America or Europe of first generation migrants, who have decided while still at a comparatively young age to return to the countries in which their forebears were raised. Both the retiree and economically active returnees have varied reasons for returning to the Caribbean and have differing experiences and expectations from the process

All chapters focus on return migration to the Caribbean, although the various case studies each provide a fresh and unique take' on the issues involved. For example, looking at the adjustments returnees make as they return to a culture and society that may have moved on since they departed two, three or four decades previously, or which they have not personally experienced previously Young returning nationals, who may never have visited their cultural homeland, may experience particular difficulties of adjustment yet have the potential to make a significant contribution to the social and economic development of Caribbean countries in the future. …
