For some years there have been few publications on firm relocation. In part this reflects the fact that suitable data sources are no longer available and partly because some believe there was little new to be said about firm relocation. Standard texts are now able to list 'location factors' emerging from both case studies and from statistical analyses of large data sets. Nevertheless, a careful perusal of the work prior to the 1980s show that a number of issues are unresolved and that questions might be asked as to whether results derived from data relating to the 1960s and 70s are relevant to locational behaviour in the twenty-first century It is in this context the present study is to be welcomed.

As the title suggests, the study sets out to explore relocation in Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. It reviews the earlier literature on relocation, describes the data bases it uses, examines the impact of regional policy on relocation, explores the roles of centre and periphery in relocation patterns, considers cross border relocation and then brings the material together in a concluding chapter. …
