Colin Baker was a District Commissioner in Nyasaland and later Under-Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet in newly independent Malawi before moving into a distinguished academic career as Principal of the University of Malawi's Institute of Administration, Director of the Institute of Administration in the University of Ife and then at Glamorgan. He has published numerous scholarly books and articles on the history of Malawi. This is a light-hearted collection of anecdotes and limericks published to raise money for the Nchima Trust, a small charity funding projects in health, education, rural credit and orphan support.

It is a book perhaps more suited to the bedside table or even the lavatory (in which case pp. 104-108 on "Visiting Africa" are recommended for perusal) than to the study or library - good for dipping into and raising a wry smile. Old Nyasaland hands will probably have fun identifying the characters in the anecdotes and recalling stories of their own. The scholar might be irritated by the lack of attributions and footnotes. …
