Society Supports Flu Vaccine Campaign

The Society is pleased to be an official supporter of the Department of Health flu immunisation campaign to promote awareness and take-up of flu vaccinations among health professionals and vulnerable patient groups.

Commenting on the launch of the campaign in October, Society Chief Executive Professor Richard Parish said: "It is particularly important for health professionals to ensure that they themselves are immunised and encourage those to whom they provide services to do likewise."

Take-up of the free vaccine remains low amongst health professionals - according to Departmental research only 16% had the free vaccine last year. This campaign aims to increase the take-up rates greatly as people acknowledge the duty-of-care to themselves and their patients.

"Health professionals are highly vulnerable through their contact with a large number of people and they also have the potential to infect a large number of vulnerable patients if they are not immunised and contract flu. The health workforce is already stretched without adding the loss of staff time and added number of patients presented by a flu epidemic. This is a public health issue where we know what to do, have the resources and where the impact will be felt sooner rather than later," said Professor Parish. …
