The year 2006 saw me publication of numerous new collections of important song literature, and none is more welcome than this collection of the complete folksong arrangements of Benjamin Britten, including a group of arrangements titled Tom Bowling and Other Song Arrangements never before published and only released by the Boosey & Hawkes in 2001. Editor Richard Walters has done a splendid job of bringing this collection to publication, not only assembling the material but also writing an excellent, informative, and thought provoking Preface that gives insight into Britten's life and work. In addition, Walters has written detailed notes for each song, including such information as date of composition, publication dates and details, text and tune sources, date, place, and performers of the first performance, any other compositional details such as subsequent orchestrations, and a list of Britten's other compositions from the period of each volume of songs. There are also notes on any discrepancies in tempo or expressive markings between the original key and transposed versions of each song.

The songs in Volume 6: Enghnd were originally arranged for voice and guitar. The editor has transcribed these arrangements for voice and piano for inclusion in this collection. …
