John Core was born in Camp Rucker, Alabama in 1951. A graduate of West Virginia University, Core is an active layman in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He is a Library Associate at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, and a Life Member of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Through the Ceaseless Web is a collection of forty-eight new or previously unpublished hymn texts in a variety of meters, treating both traditional subjects and contemporary events. The collection is supported by a full set of indices.

It is with delight that I write this review of Core's second hymn collection. Core has a unique voice as a hymnwriter which deserves strong notice in our next round of denominational hymnals. His unassuming voice blends good theology with good humor. Like Fred Pratt Green, Core writes for the church of today, but has no axe to grind. His use of language is modern, but not trendy. Core has worked hard at his craft, coming up through the ranks of the Hymn Society and taking advantage of the hymnwriters' workshops that have been offered through the years. It has been said that our hymn explosions have produced too many hymns, but we can always welcome new texts of such high quality. The church will always want to sing the issues of the day in the language of the time. This is what John Core allows us to do.

Core writes with an appreciation for classical forms. The beauty of symmetry is present in his work. …
