This is a collection of nineteen papers dealing with a variety of aspects of the Early Irish culture. Some are available for the first time in the English language. The book is divided into eight sections: The first, `Ireland and Europe', is an essay on Ireland in the early Middle Ages. `People in early Ireland' contains two papers, one on women in Celtic culture and another on the common people in Ireland. `The early Church and literary imagination' consists of three papers discussing the immrama and Irish vision literature, and the Vita Brendani, the L oya e of St Brendan, and the twelfth-century Dutch adaptation De Reis can Sint Brandaan. The three papers in `Church and society' focus on the Christianizing of Ireland, Europe, and the Church in Anglo-Saxon Britain. …
