Classical Net contains more than 4,800 reviews of CDs and DVDs (as well as a few books). At the time of writing the most recent reviews had been added on 12 June 2007 and were highlighted on the main page. A search engine is provided but unfortunately its usefulness is limited. The Boolean operators "and" and "or" are ignored in searches, but "not" does work to exclude words. Although the system asserts that the results list will show the most relevant items first, this did not hold true for any of my searches. A search on "Beethoven string quartet," which follows the site's recommended method for constructing a search, resulted in 1,612 hits, the first a link to a listing of reviews by one writer (Raymond Tuttle), the second a recording of chamber works by Guillaume Lekeu, the third and fourth to music by Alexander Glazunov. Only with the fifth item did I find a review of a compact disc containing a string quartet by Beethoven. The reviews of Lekeu and Glazunov both contained the words "string quartet," but Beethoven's name was nowhere to be found. The remainder of the list continued to alternate between relevant and irrelevant hits. …
