A Life Well Served: The Passing of a Star Ruth W. Johnson, FAAN

This has been a very difficult column to write; first, because Ruth passed so quickly; and secondly, because she was such a dear friend. One week I was talking with her over the telephone and two weeks later, I was told that she had passed. This issue of The ABNF Journal was supposed to have been her issue, where she would have served as the guest editor. Ruth had a penchant for encouraging young Black nursing faculty members to embrace writing as a means of sharing their thoughts, ideas and passions. Everyone with whom she worked over the years - we all called her the younger generation - knows how she cajoled everyone to support the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc. and The ABNF Journal. Many faculty members owe her a debt of gratitude for starting them on their writing careers.

I first met Ruth at a National League for Nursing (NLN) meeting, when she had been appointed Director of the NLN Division of Accreditation. Ruth was the first, and as far as I know, the only African American nurse to hold this position. Using this position, Ruth made giant strides in introducing Black and other minority nurses into the inner workings of the NLN, and also ensuring that these groups were adequately represented on all NLN committees. I remember working on the Task Force on Cultural Diversity with her and how the Task Force labored over definitions which, at that time were fairly new to the profession of nursing, e.g., the definition of cultural diversity, cultural competency, ethnicity, etc. It was an exciting time. Whenever I attend a meeting and they are discussing these same issues/terms, I ask, "Have you looked at what the NLN Task Force on Cultural Diversity published almost 20 years ago on these same terms? …
