The Life of the twelfth-century Welsh king Gruffudd ap Cynan, remarkable for its vivid account of the warfare between Irish, Welsh, French, and Norse nobles that led to his recovery of the kingdom of Wales, is best known from the Middle Welsh prose version most recently edited by Simon Evans (1977), with an English translation in 1990. Russell argues convincingly that the 'underlying text' of the Latin version in Aberystwydi, NLW, Peniarth MS 434 (late sixteenth century) is not, as previously diought, a translation from Middle Welsh, but rather a copy of the twelfth-century Latin original. It attracted considerable contemporary annotation and correction, on the basis of comparison with the Welsh version, and all later Latin copies are thought to derive from a fair copy of Peniarth 434 in its augmented state. …
