The Prose Works of Sir Gilbert Hay, Volume II: The Buke of the Law of Armys, ed. Jonadian A. Glenn, The Scottish Text Society, 501 series, no. 3 (Edinburgh: Scottish Text Society, 2005). xii + 401 pp. ISBN 1-897976-21-6. £30.00. This is the second volume of a projected three-volume edition of the Hay Manuscript, the sole known text of the Scots translations of three French prose treatises, made by Sir Gilbert Hay in the mid-fifteendi century. The first published volume (actually Volume III, published in 1993) contained the Buke of the Ordre of Knychthede and the Buke of the Gouernaunce of Princir, the current volume contains the first item in the manuscript, a translation of Honore Bouvet's wellknown Tree of Battles (an exposition on the laws of war). The planned final volume, when it appears, 'will treat Gilbert Hay, the Hay Manuscript and matters of text and language in detail' (p. vii). Consequendy, the present volume is not a stand-alone piece, and contains the barest minimum of introductory material, mainly concerned with The Tree of Battles. There are, however, extensive sections of textual and explanatory notes at the end, the latter mainly concerned with language, and with comparing Hay's translation with its source - for which purpose Glenn has consulted a commendably wide range of manuscripts of The Tree of Battles. …
