Chrétien de Troyes: Perceval: The Story of the Grail, trans. Nigel Bryant (Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 2006). 334 pp. ISBN 1-84384-102 9. £17.99. This excellent translation is not Nigel Bryant's first attempt at tackling Grail material, and indeed, he is by no means alone in having taken on the task of rendering Chrétien's most famous work into English. However, the fact that he has chosen to include lengthy selections from the Continuations in the scope of his translation is what sets this work apart. Bryant's translation is, as ever, highly dexterous and fluid. Poetry becomes unstilted prose at his hands, and the result is pleasingly readable. As well as Chretien's Conte, Bryant also translates the most important sections of all the Continuations (including Gerbert de Montreuil's interpolation) that appear in MS 12576 of the Bibliotheque nationale de France. As this is the only manuscript to contain all four continuations with no omissions, it seems the most sensible 'source text' to use; however, it does mean that the translation, as a faithful rendering of what the original author may have meant to say, could be seen as rather flawed. …
