The first volume in the Acta series for the diocese of Ely contains the acta of Bishop Hervey (including his acta as administrator of the abbey of Ely), Bishop Nigel (including those acta issued as a baron of the exchequer), Bishop Geoffrey Ridel, and Bishop William de Longchamp (including his acta as legate, chancellor, and justiciar). The 176 entries, which include those secular administrative acta produced by the bishops in some of their non-episcopal functions yet issued in their name as bishop, span the period from the see's creation in 1109 to Longchamp's death in 1197. The acta, many of which derive from the archives of the cathedral priory, provide an important insight into episcopal relations with the monks of Ely. …
