Winners of the 85th Anniversary Hymn Searches

Hymn Contest Winners

As part of the celebration of The Hymn Society's 85th Anniversary, the Executive Committee announced two hymn searches, one for texts and one for tunes. The deadline for submissions for both searches was May 1, and the winning text and tune were featured at the Annual Meeting during the 85th Anniversary Annual Conference in Ottawa in July.

Based on Jesus' teaching that "the least of these" should be the ones who are welcomed and served, the text search encouraged the creation of hymns that would foster such an awareness and would also help faith become active and engaged in this ongoing challenge. The winning text "Leftover People in Leftover Places," by Shirley Erena Murray accomplishes this task with power and challenge. Her text was submitted with the tune Connect by Colin Gibson, with the result that the prize money has been divided between these two New Zealanders. The judges for the text search were Mary Louise Bringle, Marilyn Stulken, and John Thornburg, who evaluated the 32 submitted texts. …
