This recording's most striking feature is its diversity, comprising a fascinating cross-section of Romany music making in Serbia. Amateurs and professionals, villagers and urban musicians alike present pieces ranging from the humorous and flirtatious to the poignant, me rather basic to the truly virtuosic, as instrumentals or songs sung in Serbian, Romany, and/or Romanian. Ensembles range from solo vocal and violin or accordion to small string bands, tamburica ensembles, and brass bands. Even tracing a single instrument, the violin, reveals a dramatic range of playing styles and tonal qualities from one track to the next. Notably absent is commercial popular music and, oddly present, a few inexplicably poor performances.

The liner notes provide a very brief background on Roma in Serbia, mostly based on the early twentieth-century work of T. Djordjevic, as well as interesting information on repertoire and instrumentation. …
