What was your first job ever?

Cleaning the office and answering the phone on Saturdays at the local Globe and Mail office.

Describe your first job in libraries.

I've actually never worked in a library! At age 30, I found myself the single mother of three children. I decided to go back to high school so I could graduate. While at the Alberta Vocational College, I took some aptitude and interest testing and three career choices resulted: lawyer, naval officer and librarian. Since I did not have an undergraduate degree, and wanted to be employed quickly to provide for my family, I took the Library and Information Technology program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and was hired by them when I graduated. I was assistant coordinator and coordinator of the Rural Library Training Project, a distance education program that trained people to work in small, rural libraries.

If you weren't a librarian/library worker, what would you be? Why?

I can't possibly imagine anything else. The library community is full of intelligent, interesting, multi-faceted people and I love working with them.

Who has been a big inspiration/influence on your library career?

Marg Anderson at SAIT. She was one of my instructors and she recommended me for my current position. She guided me well and introduced me to the library community. I also learned a great deal from Karen Labuik at Marigold Library System. We worked together on the LAA newsletter in the early 90s and again on the Alberta Library Conference Planning Committee. …
