In 1996 the Tokyo Medieval Manuscript Reading Group launched a project for an 'Electronic Corpus of Diplomatic Parallel Manuscript Texts as a Tool for Historical Studies of English'. The present volume publishes the first stage of this project, providing parallel text of the preface and parts 1-4 of four manuscripts (Corpus, Cleopatra, Nero, and Vernon) referred to in this edition collectively as Ancrene Wisse. A further volume of the remainder of the text will be published shortly. The texts are based on the Early English Text Society editions, checked against the manuscripts (although for Vernon the editors based their text initially on the published facsimile and manuscript, checked against the EETS volume when it was published in 2000). …
