Gilte Legende, Vol. I, ed. The Gilte Legende is a mid-fifteenth-century English translation of Jean de Vignay's Légende dorée, itself a translation of the Legenda aurea of Jacobus de Voragine. Some twenty-six supplementary saints' lives from the Gilte Legendehave already been edited by Richard Hamer, jointly with Vida Russell (in EETS, os 315, published in 2000), but the main part of this major prose text still awaits a modern edition. The present volume, edited by Hamer with the assistance of Russell, is the first in a projected set of three; volumes I and II will contain the text, and volume III the general introduction, notes, and glossary. This first volume contains ninety-three saints' lives which run chronologically from St Andrew (30 November) to St James (25 July), amounting to just short of 500 pages of text. In a brief note of editorial procedures the editors explain their aim of reconstructing 'as nearly as possible' the text of the 'synfulle wrecche' who made the English translation in 1438, which means that any translation errors have been allowed to stand (p. …
