Thomas Maillet (?): Les Proverbez d'Alain, ed. Tony Hunt, Les Classiques français du Moyen Âge (Paris: Honoré Champion, 2007). 133 pp. ISBN 978-2-7453-1459-8. euro18.00. This excellent little edition makes available a Middle French translation of Alain de Lille's Paraboker, the text, previously edited by J. Morawski in an edition long out of print, is now extant in a single fifteenth-century manuscript, BnF fr. 12478. The manuscript is a repository for translations, largely into verse, principally of what in the Middle Ages were known as the Aurtores morales orto; few of the translations are easily available, and Tony Hunt provides lengthy excerpts from each which enable the reader to gauge the writers' translational techniques. The Proverbez, of which this is an edition, were highly popular in the later Middle Ages; the translation is by someone who, by implication, was called Thomas Maillet, but of whom nothing is known; it can be dated, on linguistic evidence, to the end of the fourteenth century. …
