This magnificent enterprise now reaches volume V (on vol. I, see MAi, 72; on vol. II, see MÆ, 74; on vol. Ill, see MÆ, 74; on vol. IV, see MÆ, 75), which is devoted to Marco Polo's travels across southern China. This is not, it is true, the most picturesque of his journeyings: Marco scarcely lingers on what he has seen other than for the city of Hangzhou (Hangchow). But what is fascinating is the picture of a mercantile, thriving China that emerges, with its road- and waterways, its markets, its growing commercial prosperity. This new volume is as meticulously edited and carefully presented as have been the earlier volumes. The base manuscript, here as previously, is British Library, Royal 19 Di, and there is a clear, concise discussion of the (highly complex) manuscript tradition, and an invaluably complete list of manuscript variants which permit the reader to track the writing and rewriting of this immensely popular text. …
