Maistre Wace: A Celebration: Proceedings of the International Colloquium Held in Jersey, 10-12 September 2004, ed. Glyn S. Burgess and Judidi Weiss (St Helier: Société Jersiaise, 2006). viii + 197 pp. ISBN 0-901897-40-X. £15.00. Things are looking up for Wace. New editions and translations of his major works, the recent Wace Companion, and now die present 'celebration' volume. Although, like all conference proceedings, it has its weak contributions, the overall quality is high; there are a number of excellent papers and remarkably few duds. Particularly good are the regrettée Emmanuele Baumgartner on the literary and historiographical status of the Roman de Brut, Penny Eley on orality and literacy in the Roman de Rou, and Gioia Paradisi with an unusual angle on Wace's use of etymology. The papers range widely, from linguistics to art history, though most look at Wace's work from a literary standpoint, including die still-unanswered questions about his intentions in writing what, and as, he did. …
