This imposing and attractive volume brings together the proceedings of a conference held in Antwerp, which has as its focus the preoccupations relating to the Roman de k Rose which derive from North American colleagues. The themes which they concentrate on, among which are polyphony, sexuality, and iconography, are at the centre of the 1992 publication Rethinking the 'Romance of the Rose': Text, Image, Reception (Philadelphia, 1992), and it was apposite that the Antwerp meeting should point up the three fundamental aspects named in the tide of the present volume as a counterpoint to the earlier themes. There are twenty substantial papers in English and French, covering the three aspects, by North American, Belgian, Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, and Swiss scholars, ranging from well-known figures in the field to doctoral students. …
