Das Narrenschiff

Article excerpt

Doch ich nunfreiweg euch hier sag:

Wird es bald um uns werden Nacht.

we drifted downriver

under an apricot moon

along gold-sequined meanders

paddle-wheels barely turning

like mill-wheels at dead summer

black serrated funnels

spewing gossamer smoke

on decks cleared and polished

we danced entranced

in the soft glow of lanterns

to the music of Strauss

on silver sands

stiff like logs

vigilant reptiles dozed

and the surrounding night

throbbed with sound

and fright

crunching growls

scratches mastication

flash of fang

glint of iron

and in the distance

drums drums

and a rising murmur

of teeming multitudes

but we saw only each other's eyes

heard only the triple pulse of the waltz

and held each other ever more closely

entwining fingers and arms

unseeing the hand on the gunwale

the grin in the gangway

and so at Shrovetide

our carnival moth

was overrun

and devoured

by the ant-horde ruck

and swarms

of darkness

this is a story told in the past tense

that will come to pass
