Health Status, Risk Factors and Unmet Needs of Diverse Populations

The purpose of this issue of the Journal of Cultural Diversity is to highlight some of the complex and serious health issues concerning diverse populations. As we move into a new political era and a new urgency towards incorporating diversity and cultural competency into education, healthcare, and the workplace, these articles address the health status and risk factors of a variety of populations.

Park and Grindel's research on Korean Mother and Daughter Communication on Women's Health Topics documents the health related communication patterns of a selected group of Korean mothers, who speak Korean, and their adolescent daughters living in the United States. This qualitative study provides rich quotes from mother-daughter interviews and a basis for future research with the goal of developing and testing culture-specific interventions to promote health.

In the article, The Caregiving Experience Among Hispanic Caregivers of Dementia Patients: A Review, Meir found few published reports on informal Hispanic caregivers of dementia patients. This article underscores the deficits in the informal caregiving literature among people who are Hispanic and identifies implications for additional research.

Jamil and his colleagues in their article, Mental Health Symptoms in Iraqi Refugees: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression, provide one of the first studies on the mental health needs of Iraqi refugees living in the United States. The authors present implications for practice and future research.

Ragsdale and Ander's qualitative study, Migrant Latinos and Brothel Sex Work in Belize: Sexual Agency and Sexual Risk, present the perceptions of a selected group of female sex workers in Belize. …
