The New York Society for General Semantics has a new web site, designed by webmaster Lucia Sciorsei, with information about the New York Society, its lectures and workshops, as well as links to other general semantics and related web sites. To visit the site, go to www.nysgs.org.

Communication consultant and trainer Carole Grau spoke about Listening: A Neglected, Underutilized Powerful Communication Skill at the April 4 meeting of the NYSGS at the Albert Ellis Institute, 45 East 65th Street, New York City. Grau noted that spoken communication is transitory and fragile, subject to frequent breakdowns. Listening is a weak link in the process, yet people spend more time listening than performing any other communication activity.

Roben Torosyan, Ph.D., offered insights on another way to avoid communication breakdown in his workshop on Practicing Empathy: The Other Side of the Story on April 25 at the Albert Ellis Institute. Founding Director of the University Writing Center, New School University, New York City, Dr. Torosyan told his participants that whenever people talk, they tend not to really hear each other.
