On a Photograph I Found of Two Young Factory Workers Standing beside a Piece of Heavy Machinery and Inscribed on the Reverse "Sacred to the Memory of Friendship." This poem by John Wood is an imaginative "Brokeback Mountain" interpretation of an old photograph of two young men in Wilson, Kansas, "back when my grandparents were children." In this photograph, the two young men stand apart, staring into the distance. The one with the moustache wears a small ring on his little finger, and the inscriber of "Sacred to the Memory of Friendship" had also "pasted on a prescription from F. Zeman, Druggist,/ made out for the "Worst Kind of Poison." The poet imagines them as secret lovers who led ordinary lives, having ordinary conversations over a shot of whiskey or a beer, "and talked of the foreman or next Sunday's/ lesson on Deuteronomy and what to do/ with the extra tomatoes they'd grown,/ the talk of those who've come to count/ tomorrow assured. …
