When commissioned to compose a duet for a young soprano and her teacher, the composer set herself an interesting challenge: combining two different poems into one song. The two poems, one by Emily Dickinson and one about Dickinson by Annie Finch, would allow the weaving together not only of two singers of different generations but two poets of different generations as well. The challenge became a problem to be solved: how to make the text intelligible in two poems sung at one time. …
