Health Promotion Needs a Voice: Message from Conference

Delegates at the 2007 Shaping the Future conference in December were urged to join The Society as Licentiates to enable to organization to act as a voice for the specialized health promotion workforce.

The call came from Jenny Griffiths, author of the original report Shaping the future of public health: promoting health in the NHS, who acted as chair for the plenary sessions at the high-profile event.

More than 150 delegates braved freezing temperatures and transport trouble to attend the conference at Staffordshire University. They were addressed by eminent guest speakers from The Society's Professor Richard Parish to the Welsh Assembly's Head of Public Health Improvement Division, Chris Tudor-Smith.

The 2007 event opened out the programme to health promotion specialists in the four UK regions and to the Republic of Ireland, and this provided an opportunity to compare the state of the field. Tudor-Smith said that Wales was investing to provide a stronger evidence base for health promotion initiatives, while David Patterson highlighted the Scottish Government's departmental structure, which enabled those concerned with promoting health to influence a very broad range of determinants. He also held up as exemplary legislation obliging educational institutions to include health and well-being on the curriculum, and obliging local authorities to ensure that this is being met. …
