We would like to dedicate this edition to Mr. William J. York for his contributions to the Ohio Reading Teacher and the Ohio Council of the International Reading Association. He supported the birth, formation and nurturing of this journal from 1967-1978. Mr. York passed away in 2005.

Not in Ohio.....Yet!

Following is a letter received by parents in a state other than Ohio at the beginning of this school year:

Dear Fifth Grade Parents,

We are very excited about our Reading Race.

Everyone who reads one book a week on their level

And passes the computer test that goes with it, will be

A winner! And winners don't have to read for a

Whole month!

How can that happen, and what does it have to do with "From the Editors"? Well, we believe the letter above represents what will happen, inevitably, when we, reading teachers all, abandon the teaching of real READING, when we capitulate to those who have made reading a race - a chore - a "requirement", those who have said that when you finish it, you don't have to do it anymore! …
