GERIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH CARE Gary Kennedy, MD New York: The Guilford Press, 2000, 336pp., $39.00 (hardcover).

Gary Kennedy's purpose in writing Geriatric Mental Health Carewas to create a health text "expressly for generalists in primary care and mental health." The text that Dr. Kennedy has written includes an array of topics related to the emotional well-being of older persons. The table of contents lists 15 chapters including the dementias, sleep disturbances, psychotherapies, and legal and ethical issues. These and other topics are considered rather generally so that the subject matter rarely comes into focus; often there is not enough detail in the text, and the reader is referred to the bibliography that concludes each chapter. Occasionally, Dr. Kennedy provides overly detailed reviews of a topic (the discussion of the pharmacological treatment of depression and anxiety is littered with little facts unnecessary in a textbook, such as the milligrams of initial doses), so that the focus becomes too sharp.

The writing lacks clarity, and, in itself, becomes an argument against solo authorship of a general textbook. …
