A new Live Audit Service could put a stop to some councils in England and Wales overcharging on Business Rates, or National Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), the tax collected from all occupiers or owners of non-domestic property. It has been claimed that thousands of pounds in refunds are due to businesses.

GBK Exacta (UK) Ltd has pioneered a new online service that gives managers in firms 24-hour access to verified billing and rate list data for their property portfolios to prevent overpayment.

Stuart Murphy, chairman of GBK Exacta (UK) Ltd, says, "To stop local authorities from getting their hands on the extra cash, we've pioneered a unique web-accessed interface that monitors a business's portfolio for any rating list alterations and 'alerts' people to any changes or council errors. The service works in a similar way to a virus scanner on a computer, in that it continuously checks rating and billing activity and warns you when there is an effect on your portfolio. Any business with one or more properties can sign-up for a fixed fee, but we see it as a brilliant tool for small to medium sized firms looking for new opportunities for savings."
