Douglas Joel Culver was born in Yakima, WA on August 1, 1938 to Robert D. and Arlene (Hoyt) Culver. His father was a pastor and seminary professor and his mother taught Latin and French. Douglas confessed Christ as personal savior at a young age and showed an early interest in biblical languages and doctrine. After graduation from high school in Geneva, IL he attended Wheaton College, receiving his B.A. in 1960. Just after graduation in June, 1960, Douglas married Lyrle LaVonne Cue at a Bible Church in West Chicago, IL. His B.D. was obtained in 1964 from Bethel Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN, and a Ph.D. was earned from New York University in 1970, followed by a Th.M. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL in 1972. Douglas was ordained at First Baptist Church of Geneva, IL in 1967 and became a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church of America in 1978. He founded two churches in the PCA.

Between pastorates from 1982-85 Douglas was CEO and director of The Foundation of Religion and Economics in Greensboro, NC. He served as senior pastor of Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables from 1985-90, then as pastor of St. Lucie West Presbyterian Church in Port St. Lucie, FL from 1990-2000.
