James Alan Groves was born on December 17,1952 in Springfield, MO to James and Jacqueline Groves, the first of four children. James's family moved several times between Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Oklahoma where his father was an FDIC bank examiner. James was saved as a lad of ten in his Sunday School class. His grandparents on his father's side were praying for him to be saved. James was graduated from high school in Aberdeen, SD. He attended Dartmouth College and received his B.A. in 1975, followed by a B.E. (engineering) from Dartmouth in 1976. There he met Elizabeth W. Davis in a campus Christian group. They were married in the Rollins Chapel on the Dartmouth College campus, Hanover, NH on June 17, 1978. At that time, Alan was pasturing the West Fairlee Congregational Church in Fairlee, VT (1976-79).

Further education took the Groves to Westminster Theological Seminary for an M.A.R. degree (1981), followed by a Th.M. in 1983. Alan took graduate studies at Dropsie College in Philadelphia, and at the time of his death was a Ph.D. candidate at the Free University (Amsterdam), working on a thesis, "A Textlinguistic Analysis of Exodus 1-14." At Westminster, J. Alan Groves was a Lecturer in Old Testament (1982-84), Director of Admissions, Dean of Students, Assistant Professor of Old Testament (1984), and Full Professor in 1998. …
