Richard Bauckham is lately retired Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is spending his retirement, I am told, at Cambridge in England. He is the author of numerous major works familiar to scholars in the biblical fields and has solidly influenced the course and shape of both Old and New Testament studies.

Here, however, he turns his mind to telling us an entertaining mythic yarn for adults and children alike, which is purportedly taking place at this very moment in its ongoing unfolding somewhere and nowhere in a place very much like and not like Scotland; that is not so much like the country of Scotland bin the waters, lakes, and lochs of anywhere. It just makes Scotland seem familiar, that's all.

This is the heart-warming story of the MacRear family and their world of worrying and working and watching and wondering as that world changes all around them in the most mysterious way. …
