A feature of cultural studies is that it gives equal treatment to all texts, social and biographical as well as aesthetic. This follows an era when certain theoretical texts-especially French ones!-dominated intellectual discourse. Jurgen Habermas maintained the primacy of the Frankfurt School in German Studies at that time; today Walter Benjamin retains canonical status, but the other celebrated Frankfurt Theorist, philosopher and musicologist Theodor W Adorno, is less often cited. Two articles in the present issue of GQ explore and reassess his work. Both are by authors who, at this writing, have not yet completed their doctorates; indeed four of our five contributors this time are thus situated. …
