Senior Move Management

Senior move management is a very new career field in the area of aging and seniors. Many seniors who would like to stay at home are physically unable to stay there, or their support system is too weak to keep them safe. For these individuals, a move to a senior community or closer to family is necessary.

Senior move managers are highly educated individuals who can go into a home, downsize the contents to fit the new home, and take care of all the overwhelming moving details for the senior or the caregiver who may be too busy or too far away to help.

Move managers arrange to ship family pieces around the world, and find resources to buy or consign the furniture that is not going to be moved. They scale the new home/apartment and make sure the furniture that the client wants to keep will fit in the new environment. If necessary, they find storage, get reputable moving companies to pack and move, and change addresses and accounts for the senior. Having a move manager is critical if family caregivers live too far away or are too overworked to help their parent move. The senior is often more amiable about using a move manager than a family member.

I added move management to my practice because I could get the liability insurance. I was often helping seniors who had no family or source of support. Now I have the training and support personnel to make senior moves safer. In my practice with the use of move management, I have been able to move seniors to safer surroundings, closer to their support system, when the family members have failed to make this happen for years of requesting.and cajoling them to do so. In my counseling practice, with the addition of move management services, I am able to work effectively with dementia and Alzheimer's clients, giving them the professional help they need to move and support their caregivers during this very stressful transition. …
