If you are looking for a book that follows the familiar academic expectation of presenting a thesis and then arguing for it throughout the text, this is not the book for you. If you are seeking a study that seeks to shed new light on some historic figure or problem, this book will greatly disappoint you. But if you are in search of a study that searches out letters of communications that were exchanged between two significant but largely forgotten females of the mid-twentieth century, then this book is a must read for you.

Anne Firor Scott has collected and put together in book form an exchange of letter communications between Pauli Murray-an African American female who overcame the usual racist barriers to black progress and humanity and rose to be a university professor, lawyer, poet, and the first black woman to be ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church and Caroline Ware-a white female who, untouched by race and racism, was a Harvard University professor, community activist, ambassador, world traveller, and stateswoman among other mighty achievements.

Scott does not give any particular motivation for her book beyond the fact that she found the communications between Murray and Ware worthy of collecting and reporting. She believed this because those letters expose how two women of differing races and social status developed an enduring friendship during the mid-twentieth century when race relations in the United States were shaped by the longstanding assumption, indeed law, that blacks and whites must remain separate and segregated. …
