On this 20th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc., I would like to personally thank some important persons who made this event possible. First, I would like to thank my dissertation committee members at Northwestern University, chaired by Dr. William Hazard, who allowed me to include a question in my survey instrument which had absolutely nothing to do with my research. The question asked all deans of schools of nursing in the great state of Illinois if they had any minority faculty members teaching at their esteemed school of nursing and if so, would they would be so kind as to send me their names.

Secondly, I would like to thank Dr. Lois Frels, who in 1986 was director of the Division of Nursing at Bradley University located in Peoria, Illinois, where I was hired to implement a federally funded graduate nursing program in nursing administration.

Dr. Frels gave me the opportunity to administer all phases of initiating a master's degree program, e.g., hiring new faculty - Dr. Mary Wilhite, admitting new students (we admitted 34 students in the first class), and organizing those facets which led to the success of the program. In the midst of all this activity, I was able to find time to survey schools of nursing on a national level to determine the location of all Black nursing faculty, to compile a Directory of Black Nursing Faculty, to start a publishing company (Tucker Publications, Inc.), and to found ABNF, Inc. Most of you know the story by now of how I used the results of my dissertation study to invite all 42 Black nursing faculty members to tea at my home and how 22 of those faculty members attended and voted to begin efforts to start a national organization (Tucker-Allen, 1997). …
