First impressions of this engaging and fascinating book are of colour, marvellous illustrations and a wealth of detail, with the ambitious aim of explaining Scotland's geological odyssey during its 3500 million year history But who is this book aimed at? The authors suggest a nonacademic audience, and the design, layout and illustrations point to a specifically non-geological audience who can be introduced to the subject at a general level. However, the text is densely written, highly informative, and not an easy read for those without at least some prior geological or geographical knowledge. This book seems to be two books, the design and layout suggesting an approachable view for the general public, but with a text written for the more informed.

That said, for those with some background this book says it all, in clear and well-written detail, reinforced with useful boxes on key topics and on the people who shaped our view of Scotland's geology The core of the book, and its best feature, is Scotland's journey across the globe, an epic story here given its full weight. …
