The following list includes English-language doctoral dissertations completed between 1953-1989, with a supplementary list of dissertations in progress. The list was compiled from Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI) (through June 1989) and Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology (7th cumulative ed., 1984 and 1986-1988 supplements). When available, volume and page numbers for abstracts in DAI are given, followed by order numbers from University Microfilms International. Abstract citations in RILM are added for a few not listed in DAI.
The dissertations selected for this list all include "Beethoven" as a keyword in the title. The majority were completed for degrees in musicology, but dissertations for performance, theory, and education degrees are also included. Taped performances of Beethoven's music have been excluded. For those dissertations comprised of two or three unrelated topics, only that part that deals with Beethoven has been cited.
The dissertations are listed by subject, and no "see references" have been given in cases where a dissertation could be included in more than one category.
Future issues of the Newsletter will list non-English language dissertations and more general dissertations in English that include substantive discussions of Beethoven and his music. We ask for the assistance of our readers in bringing any additions and corrections to our attention, particularly when in-progress dissertations are completed.
