THE FOLLOWING LIST IS AN UPDATE OF THE FIRST BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DISSERTATIONS ON BEETHOVEN which was published in vol. 4, no. 2 (Summer 1989) of The Beethoven Newsletter. Part A (dissertations with Beethoven as a tide keyword) includes dissertations completed since 1989 as well as masters' and doctoral theses which were omitted from the original list. Part B (dissertations with Beethoven as an abstract keyword) expands the list to include more general dissertations with significant discussions of Beethoven as indicated from the abstracts.
The list was compiled from the printed and online indexes of Dissertations Abstracts International (DAI), Master's Abstracts (MA), and RILM, with additions from Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology and the Research Chronicle of the Royal Music Association (for dissertations from the U.K.). When available, volume and page numbers for abstracts in RILM and DAI or MA are provided, followed by order numbers from University Microfilms International.
The majority of these theses and dissertations were completed for degrees in musicology, performance, theory, and music education, but the general list also includes dissertations outside the field of music. For degrees in music composition, works which were in some way influenced or inspired by Beethoven's music are also included (see section IIIf). Taped performances of Beethoven's music have been excluded. For those dissertations comprised of two or three unrelated topics, only that part that deals with Beethoven has been cited.
Both parts A and B have been organized according to the Beethoven content. In part B (non-Beethoven dissertations), this means that a volume on Schoenberg's orchestral music which includes an analysis of Beethoven's String Quartet, Opus 95, will be listed under studies of Beethoven's chamber music. Brief descriptions of the material within each dissertation which relates to Beethoven are given in brackets.
Updates of this list will appear periodically in The Beethoven Newsletter. I ask for the assistance of our readers in bringing any additions and corrections to our attention, particularly when inprogress dissertations are completed. I have also compiled a selective list of dissertations in other languages which is available on request. Please write to the Curator at the address on the back page of this newsletter.
