The second chapter examines the early criticism of the symphony. The remainder of the book is devoted to performance practices and reception of the symphony in the 19th and 20th centuries. Appendix 1 compares Schiller's Ode to the text used in the symphony (with the original German and English translation of the verses set by Beethoven).
